MWA were appointed in 2012 to prepare designs to transform a detached property in Wimbledon into a contemporary home for a growing family. The brief focused proposals on a ‘new-build’ component to the rear of the property with minimal works to the existing house. The new rear extension coupled with a new basement level below the rear terrace has significantly extended the floor space for the family.
The rear elevation has been rationalised through the reconfiguration of unsympathetic 20th century extensions, opening up the property to the large rear garden.
The single-storey extension has been designed with more traditional arched openings to tie in with the host building, whilst the Crittal-style windows provide a contemporary aesthetic. The glazed link creates a visual break between the new and the old components.
