A new commercial development incorporating a retained facade of a building of merit
Marek Wojciechowski Architects were appointed to prepare proposals to develop this underused site to create modern commercial space suitable for a variety of business sizes and types for the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. The design retained the façade of the Building of Merit at No. 160 Hurlingham Road, while incorporating the warehouse aesthetic of the original buildings on the site in a manner sympathetic to the Hurlingham Conservation Area.
The main mass of the scheme has been situated facing the railway viaduct with the top story set back from Hurlingham Road, and not visible from street level, to mitigate impact on the predominately residential area to the east. Given the excellent transport links to the site, the development is proposed to be car free, minimising any traffic impact on local streets. The proposals utilise a mixture of red and dark brickwork, dark metal and ceramic brick detailing. Renewable energy technologies and landscaping principles are proposed to ensure a development of low environmental impact with sustainable running costs.
