Award-winning retrofit apartments in the heart of Islington
MWA’s recently completed development is situated at number 30 Old Street on the boundaries of both the St. Luke’s Conservation Area and the Hat and Feathers Conservation Area; immersed in the eclectic mix of design, materials and ornament, and a grid of narrow back-streets that make London’s East End so unique. In contrast, the 1960s commercial building offered no contribution to this character and remained vacant and unlet. MWA proposed to strip away the building’s façade retaining only its steel and concrete skeleton as part of a residential conversion that provides eight, high-end residential apartments.
The contemporary proposals using brick work, brass cladding and extensive glazing enhance the character of the area by restoring the proportions of the town houses that once occupied the site. In 2017, Marek Wojciechowski Architects were shortlisted for the AJ Retrofit Housing Award Under £5m for Barbican House (30 Old Street).
