MWA receives planning consent for redeveloping a row of terraces in South Kensington

Location: South Kensington
Local Authority: Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea
Size: 9,207 sqft
Structural Engineer: Axiom Structures

Just off High Street Kensington, MWA’s client has acquired a row of terraces with intent to develop them into a series of high-end houses and flats. Amalgamating some of the separate flats back to houses and rationalising others, this project presented a complex opportunity to develop a scheme that makes a positive contribution to the street scape.

A new mansard storey is proposed across the terrace to maximise the footprint of the scheme and to unify the façade in keeping with the character of the neighbouring properties. The roof is a butterfly structure, which is consistent with the existing building and the approach taken for many buildings of this period and area. The butterfly structure will manifest to the rear, improving views towards the rear of the terrace. Beneath the houses, a new basement has been proposed with a glass bridge over the rear lightwell providing space, light, and a contemporary edge to the rear garden.
